Shalom aleichem

Shalom aleichem (; Hebrew: שָׁלוֹם עֲלֵיכֶם, šālōm ʿalēḵem; Hebrew pronunciation: [ʃaˈloːm ʕaleːˈxem]) is a spoken greeting in Hebrew, meaning "peace be upon you". The appropriate response is aleichem shalom ("unto you peace") (Hebrew: עֲלֵיכֶם שָׁלוֹם). The plural form "עֲלֵיכֶם‎" is used even when addressing one person.

This form of greeting is traditional among Jews throughout the world. The greeting is more common among Ashkenazi Jews.

Examples of use of Shalom Aleichem
1. Nir was a student at the Shalom Aleichem Middle School in Holon, where he had gone after graduating from the city‘s Shenkar Elementary School.
2. Later, Begin‘s aides would join the journalists in singing "Habemus Pacem Aleichem" to the tune of "Heveinu Shalom Aleichem." Unlike President Carter, a devout Christian from the South who was not a supporter of Israel, and who applied atomic pressure on Begin to give up all of Sinai and its settlements and made him sign a document recognizing the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, President Bush is a fan – even a groupie – of Israel.
3. Visiting the synagogue on Friday, Pope Benedict XVI greeted the Lehrers and the hundreds of others with an excited "shalom aleichem." He went on to say that, "It has been my deep desire, during my first visit to Germany since my election...to meet the Jewish community of Cologne and the representatives of Judaism in Germany." In fact the synagogue meeting was a personal initiative and underlined his desire to maintain the warm partnership with world Jewry initiated by John Paul II.
4. By Benny Ziffer The tired and confused group of new–immigrant families from India were shown on the Tuesday evening news arriving at Ben–Gurion Airport, waving Israeli flags and singing "Heveinu Shalom Aleichem." The authenticity of their descent from the Biblical tribe of Menasseh is comparable to mine from Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf, or from Snow White‘s Seven Dwarfs.
